I like to bring as little as possible as to have just my carry-on bags and my surfboard if I don't think I can find a good rental.
Does anyone out there have a good strategy of bare essentials to bring on a surf trip via aircraft that you can get everything aboard as a carry-on?

Packing light for a surf trip is an art form, especially when you're constrained to carry-on luggage. Here's a strategy that might help:
Surfboard: Obviously, this is your main piece of equipment. Look into compact or inflatable options that can fit into a travel bag. Some brands even offer specialized bags that allow you to carry your board as a carry-on as its necessary to protect your surfboard when travelling.
Wetsuit: Roll it tightly to save space. Consider a thinner wetsuit if you're traveling to warmer waters to minimize bulk.
Accessories: Bring just the essentials like wax, leash, fin key, and repair kit. Pack these in a small pouch to keep them organized and easily accessible.
Clothing: Opt for lightweight, quick-drying clothes. A couple of swimsuits, a few t-shirts, shorts, and a hoodie or lightweight jacket for cooler evenings should suffice.
Toiletries: Stick to travel-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, and any other personal care items you need. Remember to comply with airline regulations regarding liquids.
Tech and Documents: Pack your phone, charger, and any necessary travel documents (passport, ID, tickets) in a compact travel organizer or pouch.
Snacks and Water: Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and pack some non-perishable snacks for the journey.
Footwear: A pair of flip-flops or sandals should cover your footwear needs for the trip.
