Getting Older Tips

Hey Everyone,

I'm WELL over 30 (heck, WELL over 35) but I still hit dawn patrol every morning and try to get out for a few hours on the weekend days.  I've got a few bad discs in my neck and a nerve that gets pinched in my right shoulder (I'm left-handed & goofy though).  I've got a great sports med doc, physical therapist, and acupuncturist.  I've had SEVERAL cortisone shots in the neck, shoulders, right hand and wrist.  In fact, as I sit here typing I've got my shoulder and wrist brace on to try to alleviate the pain.


So, my question is...for all of you "seasoned" surfers out do you deal with recurring pain/old injury?  I do massage, creams, pain meds, good diet & exercise, and everything described above but I'm still having lots of pain issues.  I'm not a fan of surfing the really easy beginner spots and I hope I'm not going to have to do those very soon and be banished from my favorite good spots.


Any tips?  Any advice?  I'd love to hear how anyone in their 40s, 50s, and 60s deal with the everyday nagging pains.

    I'm in the well over 35 club too and have been an avid surfer since 20 years old. I've been very luck to have not had any nagging pains as of now except for injuries now and then. I do have many surf friends in this same club that have suffered with chronic pains in the neck, shoulder, back & knee that all had the same common way to correct it... surgery. Of course it was a last resort but it did the job for them. I remember that they had to stay out of the water for 6 to 9 months but they’re all back surfing strong as ever with a lonnnnng life of surfing ahead of them.
